Difference between 5GHz and 2.4 GHz
The comparison and more efficient question between the two arises due to the recent marketing strategy of routers that comes with “Dual Band Support” i.e both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands are available. First of all, time to break a myth.
Myth 1: 5Ghz is a new technology and revolutionized the network market.
Fact: Original WiFi Standard (IEEE 802.11 A) clearly shows that we have been using 5Ghz there also but the technique and channels used today are completely different.
Some common differences that can be thought first of all are:-
- Range (Coverage Area)
Obviously, the lower the band, the higher will be the range. So 2.4Ghz will provide a higher range than 5Ghz.
- Data Throughput (WiFi speed)
5Ghz band will give a higher speed than the 2.4Ghz band.

- Interference
2.4Ghz will encounter higher interference than the latter one.

- Data Congestion
Data Crowding will be more in 2.4Ghz band than 5Ghz band.
Myth 2: 5Ghz band is faster because data is bursting at a rate of 5*(10^9) samples/sec.
Fact: The concept of higher throughput lies in the number of independent channels. The channels in the 5Ghz band are large in number with minimum overlapping a.k.a minimum interference.
The usual daily life wireless devices that we use works on 2.4Ghz frequency bands like cordless phones, microwave ovens, blue-tooth headsets, etc.
